Anything is possible when you enlist in Simulation Week. For one week participants are dropped into a unique real-time leadership simulation carefully structured by multiple mentors for maximum impact. They are given a potentially life if not humanity threatening problem, and four days in which they must work together with their other team mates to solve. Optional meals are provided, so as the situation escalates throughout the week participants can, and often do, work through meals. As they learn to work with, off, and against each other, the youth cultivate and discover new talents and skills such as lobbying, talking to and around people, diplomacy, parliamentary procedure and countless other skills. At the end of the week everyone participates in the formal banquet finale, where the success of the group is presented for all to see.

The AYLI Executive Board is excited to announce that AYLI is going through a restructuring process that will be accomplished by the end of June 2012. This restructuring is occurring in order to allow AYLI to grow and expand. Each club will have its own unique changes and you will be hearing from your Club’s Liaison before the end of June. We just wanted all the current clubs to be aware that changes are going to happen and you will no longer be paying a registration fee to AYLI which was due next month. Please do not send that in.

Also, there is no Adviser Training Retreat being held this Saturday. Each Liaison will be holding her own training this spring. It may be live or an audio recording. They will get with you shortly if you are a registered club. We will also post the information here very soon.

Our YASA club thoroughly loved “Corrie ten Boom’s: Keeper of the Angels’ Den”. It was evident that it really touched the girls hearts as they shared their thoughts on loving their enemies, enduring hard times, and recognizing God’s hand and love in their lives during difficult times. One girl, specifically, talked of a friend in her own life who had really hurt her feelings. It was hard for her to not have bad feelings whenever she passed this friend’s home. After reading this book she said that she knelt on her knees and prayed for her friend to be blessed and have a good life. In the spirit of healing hearts, we chose to make medical dolls for Primary Children’s Hospital. The dolls will be used for therapeutic play to teach about possible medical procedures or to become comfortable with their medical experience. The dolls’ frames were prepared before hand and then at the meeting the girls were split into three groups. One grouped stuffed cotton in the dolls and sewed up the side, the second group cut hospital gowns for the dolls, and the third group sewed the gowns. As a gathering activity, we colored and pasted together our own paper doll to go into our scrapbooks. And then we won’t forget our scrumptious dutch meal of Erwtensoep - split pea soup, patats - baked french fries with mayo, ketchup and onions, and stroopwafels - a waffle cookie with a carmel filling. We enjoyed hearing about the adult skill experience of price comparing while buying the ingredients for Split Pea soup and ordering stroopwafels off line. It was a great book and activity with which to start out our year together.

Renae is the mother of five children and has been home educating since 1992. She grew up in the military (and then married into it) and has travelled and lived throughout many cultures both in the United States and Europe. She and her family have settled and been living in Utah for the last 20 years. Her hobbies consist of reading (usually 3 or 4 books at once), quilting, needlepoint, family history, and playing with her grandchildren.

Renae has served in several volunteer positions with various homeschool organizations over the course of the last 20 years, all of which she has grown and gathered experience from. She got involved with AYLI in 2006 when she started a Statesmanship Club in her area. She fell in love with the program and working with the youth. “It is truly inspiring to work with the great courage and leaders that are forming in the youth of today. They give me great hope for our future.”

Renae is currently serving AYLI as the Statesmanship Club Liaison. She hopes to be able to help other people get involved with the Statesmanship Clubs and share her love for them.

Rosie lives in West Jordan, UT with her husband, David, and their five kids, and they’ve been a homeschooling family since 1997 when their oldest child was three. Their homeschool methods and curricula have varied over the years, but their emphases have always been on civics, leadership education, and following their children’s interests.

During 2007-2008, the Ferguson family spent a year traveling around the United States, learning about the history, science, and people of this great country. Some of their favorites include the Redwoods; St. Augustine, FL; Atlantis Space Shuttle launch; Wright Brothers monument; Washington, D.C.; and fireworks over Lake Erie, as well as the many friends they made around the United States.

The Fergusons first learned of AYLI after returning to their home state of Utah. Through this inspiring organization, their kids have been involved in Knights of Freedom, YASA, and Statesmanship Club, where they’ve performed many hours of service, learned leadership skills, and participated in Mock Trials, Simulations Week, Knights of Freedom Summit, and Liberty Bowl.

The 2011-12 school year has brought some changes to the Ferguson Homeschool, as the two oldest kids are participating in the show choir, a cappella choir, and the school musical at the local high school, while continuing to study at home for the remainder of their courses.

Rosie is excited to be a part of the AYLI board and to serve you and your children as AYLI Treasurer.

Everyone did very well and learned a lot about our nation’s founding. It was impressive to see how knowledgeable the youth were on the American Revolution and The Constitution. We had six junior teams and three senior teams compete for a total of 36 youth! We hope to see our numbers continue to grow as they have the last few years. The pictures below are the two first place teams in the junior and senior divisions.
